The ICO at Indiana State’s Contemporary Music Festival
The ICO performed Thursday at Indiana State’s Contemporary Music Festival. We’ve been the guest orchestra for the Festival since 2007 and were thrilled to be invited back this year!
The Contemporary Music Festival has been running annually at Indiana State University since 1967. Each year the Festival features the work of contemporary composers, and has included the likes of Gabriela Lena Frank, David Baker, Richard Einhorn, Michael Daugherty, John Corigliano and William Bolcom. (Quick aside…the ICO is performing William Bolcom’s Third Symphony on Saturday, October 27th on our Classically Contemporary Concert at the University of Indianapolis’ DeHaan Center for the Arts.)
|Martin Kuuskmann and Christopher Theofanidis|
This year’s Contemporary Music Festival featured the music of American composer Christopher Theofanidis. We performed his Bassoon Concerto (a virtuosic tour-de-force) with bassoon soloist Martin Kuuskmann.
|Daren Redman and Bin Li|
We also performed Autobahn Beyond by Bin Li. This work won the ICO’s annual Composition Competition. Mr. Li, who was in attendance at the concert, was presented with a commemorative art piece created by Indiana textile artist Daren Pitts Redman. Interestingly, Bin Li’s composition was inspired by art – his friend Brad Emerson’s Autobahn painting series. He was most excited to receive Ms. Redman’s art piece depicting Indiana Landscape.
