Hailed by the international media for his “high-powered, electrifying performances”, Eli Eban was appointed principal clarinetist of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra under Lukas Foss immediately after graduating from the Curtis Institute of Music. He subsequently joined the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra at the invitation of Zubin Mehta, where he performed and recorded all the major symphonic repertoire with the world’s finest conductors, including Claudio Abbado, Leonard Bernstein, Christoph von Dohnanyi, Daniel Barenboim, Georg Solti and Kurt Masur.
Eban has appeared as soloist with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, City of London Sinfonia, Salzburg Camerata Academica, Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia, and the Israel Camerata/Jerusalem, among others. He tours extensively as a chamber musician, collaborating with renowned ensembles such as the Alexander, Orion, St. Petersburg and Ying quartets. A frequent participant of the famed Marlboro Music, Eban has recorded for the Saphir, Crystal, Meridian and Naxos labels.
Eli Eban taught at the Eastman School of Music before joining the faculty of Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University, where he holds a distinguished rank of professorship. He tours worldwide as a chamber musician and serves as the principal clarinetist of the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra and Acting Principal of the Israel Camerata/Jerusalem, with whom he recently toured Australia. Upcoming engagements include a tour of Israel with the Aviv Strong Quartet.
